vegan with a slow colon (ew, I know, help please)?
June 4th, 2010 | by admin |Ok, here’s what I eat: brown rice with flax, grapefruit, apples, plums, cherries, grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, swiss chard, broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, onions, summer squash, tomatoes, spinach, hemp protein powder… I suffer from constipation, food sensitivities (gluten, soy, corn, nuts and seeds) and a continually bloated abdomen which is NOT ok because I model. I had a colonoscopy and was found to have a beautiful colon (I know, what?! gross) but a slow one. I don’t want to go on meds. What can I do? I drink plenty of water, only two cups of yerba mate a day, no salt. I exercise. I’ve started with some digestive enzymes, but I don’t know what else will help. Should I add egg whites back in the diet and try to cut back on some of my fiber? I don’t know if I could do it. Please please please help me.
The vegetables you consume, are they cooked? If so, that’s the problem.
Eat two cups of raw high fiber vegetables (carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower) every day, and the situation should resolve itself.
Congratulations on your beautiful colon. You must be very proud. : )

NO! adding any animal product will NOT help.
Try Super Seeds from Garden of Life. My daughter in law had the same problem these did help her. Keep up everything thing else you are doing.

One thing that can give you constipation is too much calcium and not enough magnesium. If you are doing any type of dairy like cheese, dairy milk, or dairy based yogurt quit immediately. They have a two to one ratio of calcium to magnesium ratio.
I might suggest as well taking a magnesium only supplement. I like Natural calm in power form. You can get a pretty high dosage. If you stools start to get too loose then back off a bit. You can control the dosage more easy in power form. I recommend heating it up like a tea as it will absorb more quickly.
You need not do this forever. Once your bowls start to normalize only take this product when needed, like when you get muscle cramps, or are stressed, constipated, etc.
Best of wishes : )

It could be due to your food combinations.
Certain foods should not be eaten together for reasons of digestibility. Different foods require different digestive conditions in the stomach and combining different foods can have quite an affect on digestion.
Look at the last page of this document:
http://www.bestbread.ca/QUICK_-_REFERENCE_NUTRITION_CHART.pdf
Hemp protein powder could be a source of bloating as most protein powders seem to have this affect — although they are usually soy protein powders.
Hm… you seem to just have very poor digestion. Look into digestive flora and probiotic foods that will help to replenish and build up your digestive flora. This is very important. Then totally avoid foods that work against your digestive flora or compete for it such as sugary foods that promote the growth of the ‘bad’ bacteria that compete against the ‘good’ flora.
Soy yogurts, miso, tempeh, natto, and other fermented foods (avoid any white vinegar (kills the flora), such as those fake pickles made with it). You can also look into digestive enzymes that will also help during your recovery stage, but recommend to stick to foods, not supplements… you can use such digestive aids for large or difficult to digest meals, but don’t become dependent on them for every meal as this will may tell your body to expect such things and to not bother producing it’s own etc.
Visit the Chinese herbalist and they will have some natural remedies too. Such as Po Chai Pills which are good for indigestion.
